From the factory, VW's had a plastic protective cover that snapped directly on to the top of the battery. This cover prevented the bottom steel springs on the back seat from arching against the positive battery terminal and catching the car on fire. Many Volkswagens no longer have this protective cover, so this is a handy item to use as a substitute.
